Terms of Use
Effective August 10, 2026
These Terms of Use govern this website, its email materials, and digital products sold under The Light I Left On brand. The site is published under The Light I Left On name. By using the site or purchasing a product, you agree to these terms.
Digital products and delivery
The First Letter is sold as a digital PDF and EPUB download. Nothing is shipped. A valid email address and compatible reading software are required. A payment processor handles checkout, tax calculation, digital delivery, and payment-method refunds under the terms shown at checkout.
A purchase is a one-time transaction unless the checkout page clearly states otherwise. The current book offer is not a subscription.
Personal-use license
When you purchase or receive a digital file, The Light I Left On grants you a limited, nonexclusive, nontransferable license to use it for your own personal, noncommercial purposes.
You may not resell, redistribute, upload, publicly post, reproduce for a group, remove ownership notices from, or create a competing product from the files without prior written permission. You may make reasonable personal backup copies.
Editorial scope and no outcome guarantee
The content is an editorial writing guide. It is not therapy, medical care, legal advice, a diagnostic service, or a substitute for individualized advice. It does not determine why any person stopped contact and does not speak for an estranged adult child.
No reply, meeting, renewed contact, forgiveness, or reconciliation is promised. Examples are provided to explain editing choices. Composed examples are identified as composed and are not represented as private letters or tested interventions.
Acceptable use
You agree not to misuse the site, interfere with its operation, attempt unauthorized access, submit unlawful material, use the site to harass another person, or use any product as a tool for pressure, surveillance, or unwanted repeated contact.
Intellectual property
The site design, text, product files, brand names, graphics, and other original material are owned by The Light I Left On or used with permission. Except for the personal-use license above, no ownership right is transferred to you.
Third-party services
The site may rely on third-party services for hosting, checkout, email delivery, and analytics. Those services may have their own terms and privacy practices. The Light I Left On is not responsible for a third-party service that is outside its reasonable control, but this does not limit rights that cannot lawfully be limited.
Refunds
The 30-day keep-the-files guarantee is governed by the Refund Policy. If that policy gives you a right that is more favorable than a general provision in these terms, the Refund Policy controls for that refund request.
Disclaimers
The site and its content are provided on an "as available" basis. To the fullest extent permitted by law, The Light I Left On disclaims implied warranties that do not apply by law. Nothing in these terms excludes an express promise stated in the Refund Policy or a consumer right that cannot be waived.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, The Light I Left On will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from use of the site or a digital product. Any direct liability will not exceed the amount you paid for the product giving rise to the claim. These limits do not apply where applicable law does not permit them.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of North Carolina, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that is not resolved informally will be brought in a court with lawful jurisdiction in North Carolina, unless consumer law requires another forum.
Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated when the site, services, or legal requirements change. The effective date at the top will be revised. Changes apply prospectively unless the law requires otherwise.
